The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) announced earlier this week the certification of Indiana’s aluminium milling firm Jupiter Aluminum Corporation’s facilities in Hammond against ASI’s Performance Certification for responsible aluminium production, sourcing, and stewardship. Jupiter’s ASI certification is the first achieved by a United States-based aluminium firm.

The Hammond facilities are the site of Jupiter’s scrap aluminium melting operation, where it utilizes the molten scrap aluminium to form common aluminium alloy coils for sale to buyers throughout North America.

ASI’s Chief Executive Officer Fiona Solomon congratulated Jupiter Aluminum on its historic achievement.

“We are delighted to congratulate Jupiter Aluminum Corporation on their ASI Certification, the first to be achieved in the USA. Their passion and commitment to sustainability as a recycler is testament to the importance of a circular economy approach for aluminium. We are very proud to have them as ASI members and see them achieve the first US-based ASI Certification.”

Jupiter Aluminum’s CEO Paul-Henri Chevalier noted the certification’s confirmation of the firm’s continuing commitment to responsible aluminium production.

“We are very honoured to be the first facility in the United States to achieve certification to the ASI Performance Standard. The purpose of our business, recycling aluminum, is based on our philosophy that waste can be dramatically reduced when scrap is recycled to be re-used under new applications. We are proud of the fact that a comprehensive external audit of our business operations has acknowledged and confirmed our longstanding efforts in responsible aluminum production. This ASI certification means a lot to every Jupiter Aluminum employee as its principles and ambitions have been anchored in the company’s DNA since day one. We see the ASI certification not as an objective, but as a baseline for continuous improvement towards a more sustainable aluminum world.”

ASI’s Performance Standard is the product of consultations with a multitude of stakeholders throughout the aluminium value chain, which ASI asserts is the sole comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative in the aluminium sector. The certifications, which each last for three years, were audited by DNV GL of Norway.

The ASI is a worldwide organization dedicated to setting industrial standards and certifications in the aluminium industry. The association attempts to bring together the various stakeholders in the aluminium industry in order to achieve objectives including sustainable production methods, material chain-of-custody procedures, recycling, social impacts related to aluminium production, and production standards.

Boasting an annual production capacity of 125 thousand metric tons, Jupiter utilizes recycled aluminium for 96 percent of its feedstock. The Hammond, Indiana firm operates a trio of locations, including a scrap processing unit in its home state and two painting factories, one each in Indiana and West Virginia. Jupiter reported almost US$400 million in revenue in the 2018 fiscal year.
